Matthew Mole

Biography

Matthew Mole’s father taught him guitar in Fish Hoek; he taught himself the rest — ukulele, banjo, banjolele, piano, organ, drums. He was writing by the end of school and studying music production by 2010. Winning Converse’s Get Out of the Garage in 2012 put him on stage at London’s 100 Club and in a New York studio, and led to a record deal.

The Home We Built made him the first South African artist to debut at number one on iTunes SA on the day of release. Run did it again in 2016. Four albums in, the sound is still what people call folktronica — organic indie folk with electronics underneath it.

He has played Sunset Sessions longer than anyone else on this bill: December 2019, again on 21 December 2025, and now the Saturday after Christmas. Warm, melodic, unhurried — the right volume for a day when nobody is in a hurry.
